Retinopathy of Prematurity

This week we look at one of the most common causes of preventable visual loss in preterm babies – Retinopathy of Prematurity or ROP. Needless to say, all preemies less than 35 weeks and / or weighing less than 2 kgs with the below risk factors must be screened within the first 30 days of life.

Did you know that there are risk factors other than oxygen which may cause worsening of ROP?
These are apnea, anemia, sepsis, multiple transfusions, administration of surfactant, poor post natal weight gain & intraventricular hemorrhage.
