Angular Deformities around the Knee

22nd August 2017:

This week we look at angular deformities around the knees in children. We know that Genu Varum or bow knees are often physiological from 0 – 2.5 years whereas Genu Valgum or knock knees are physiological from 3 – 6 years. But which cases of angular deformities in knees should raise a red flag in our mind?

Bow legs

Consider pathological causes if:

  • Genu varum after 3 years

  • Genu valgum before 1 year

  • Asymmetric/ Unilateral

  • Signs of Rickets

  • Signs of Skeletal Dysplasia
